KL Tourism Master Plan To Shape City’s Future

As the main gateway to Malaysia, the nation’s federal capital, Kuala Lumpur or KL as she is fondly known, has much to offer as a destination. Yet her potential has not been fully unlocked. The Kuala Lumpur Tourism Master Plan 2015 – 2025 is set to change that and turn the city into a top-of-mind destination that delivers exciting and diverse urban experiences, supported by world-class infrastructure and services.

KL Tourism Master Plan To Shape City’s Future

Five key areas of opportunity have been identified to drive the growth of KL’s tourism industry:
  • Fully-capture demand for multi-cultural experiences.
  • Strengthen premier shopping destination position.
  • Establish KL as a nature & adventure tourism destination.
  • Enhance position as the preferred destination for MICE, education and medical tourism.
  • Ensure provision of world-class infrastructure and tourism products that are well-maintained.

For the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) industry, the three key initiatives that will drive the industry forward in the coming decade are:

1. Develop KL-specific MICE strategy, branding, incentives, organisation and capabilities
This will involve the setting-up of a KL-specific dedicated MICE unit within the proposed KL Tourism Bureau to forward the determined KL MICE strategy. The dedicated unit will work closely with the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) to strengthen KL’s business and MICE tourism branding and positioning through:
  • Attendance at MICE tradeshows worldwide.
  • Assist in event planning and coordination.
  • Serve as a platform for industry coordination and development.
  • Greater on-the-ground support.
  • Development of enticing benefits packages.
  • Subvention funding.

2. Develop unique diversified and world-class MICE venues and facilities
This will see the drafting of comprehensive and clear guidelines for MICE venues and events in line with international standards (eg. the International Association of Conference Centres Quality Standards). In tandem with this is the push for world-class MICE venues and facilities by:
  • Enabling capacity building for existing and new facilities, especially those for more than 10,000 delegates.
  • Improving standards and quality of support infrastructure in the vicinity of venues.
  • Developing a ranking and reward system for top venues and facilities that adhere to international standards.
In addition, there will be the diversification of MICE venues and facilities offerings to include the opening up of iconic landmarks as event venues and the building of unique offsite locations such as, kampong or village-style houses and restored old/historical buildings like the Istana Negara (former King’s Palace), KL Performing Arts Centre, Seri Perdana (official residence of Malaysia’s Prime Minister), etc.

3. Develop distinct and attractive MICE packages and programmes
This will draw on KL’s strengths by incorporating potential activities such as arts and crafts, introduction to KL’s heritage, culinary classes and nature-based activities; amongst others, into packages and programmes. Diversified complementary offerings will also be launched to further enrich the overall experience of MICE delegates during their stay like spouse programmes offering authentic and rich experiences, stay extension packages, etc. The arrival experience will also be further heightened with initiatives such as:
  • Fast-track immigration clearance for VIP delegates.
  • Banners welcoming delegates of major events.
  • Designation of special lounge/waiting area for delegates awaiting pick-up.
  • Smooth clearance for importation of conference materials, etc.

Besides Business & MICE, the other tourism segments targeted under the master plan are Culture, Heritage & Places of Interest; Shopping; Entertainment; Nature & Adventure; Luxury Travel; Sports; Medical & Wellness; and Education.
